The craft
In Akan tradition, a stool is never just a seat
Among the Akan peoples of Ghana, the carved wooden stool — dwa — is one of the most meaningful objects a household owns. A stool marks belonging: children traditionally received their first stool as a rite of welcome, and a well-made stool stayed with its owner for life.
The form we reinterpret here is the everyday domestic stool: a crescent seat that cradles the sitter, a carved central column flanked by corner posts, and a solid plinth that grounds the whole. Carvers traditionally work each stool from a single block of sese wood, and the column's carving carries meaning — proverbs, values, aspirations — often drawn from the adinkra symbol system.
Adinkra symbols are a visual language of the Akan: each mark condenses a proverb into a single form. Carving one into a seat is a quiet, daily reminder of the value it names.

Greatness, leadership, and the charisma to carry both. Three concentric rings — the simplest symbol in the system, and the one said to have inspired all the others.

It is no shame to return for what you have forgotten. The heart-form Sankofa curls back on itself — learning from the past to build what comes next.
Materials
Three finishes, one honest wood
Every stool starts as kiln-dried sese (Holarrhena floribunda) — the carver's wood of the Ashanti Region: light, fine-grained, and kind to the chisel. The finish decides its voice.

Choose wood, motif and size, then download your spec card. The card is your quote and your reference in one.
Confirm & deposit
Send the card to the studio and pay a 50% deposit by mobile money or bank transfer to reserve a bench slot.
Six weeks of carving
Your stool is carved, seasoned and finished by hand in Kumasi. You receive photos at the halfway mark.
Delivery
Collection from the workshop, courier within Ghana, or crated sea freight worldwide. The balance is due on dispatch.
